CultureGrams in Action: Planning a Fiesta

Recently, CultureGrams editors had an opportunity to visit a local junior high classroom to see CultureGrams in action. As part of a unit on Latin America, the 8th grade geography class received the assignment to plan a fiesta and create an invitation. The students picked a country in Latin America for the theme of their fiesta and created invitations. The excitement was high as the students used both the World and Kids Editions of CultureGrams to learn about greetings, dishes, and activities that are popular in their countries to include in the invitation.

While not part of this classroom assignment, CultureGramsrecipesenable readers to not only plan, but also make meals authentic to the country that they are studying. For each country in the online World Edition, there are several recipes for appetizers, main courses, and desserts, all authentic dishes eaten by people living in those countries.

Here’s a tasty example fromHondurasfound online:

Baked Bananas

Ingredients:
Bananas, sliced in half
Butter
Sugar
Cinnamon sticks
Milk
Aluminum foil
Directions:

  1. Grease baking dish with butter. Place on top the desired amount of bananas. Add sugar to taste, cinnamon to taste, and enough milk to cover the bananas. Place cubed butter on top.
  2. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F for 5 minutes. Uncover and put back into oven. Let milk consume and the bananas get to a golden brown color. Serve hot or cold.
