Overview

These microfiche collections trace the changes in occupation objectives and document the reforms that established the groundwork for the economic resurgence of modern Japan. For economists, historians, cross-cultural specialists, and students of the political process, these collections provide a unique record of the day-to-day contacts between occupation authorities and Japanese government officials in every sector of the economy. It is a record of managing change that has great relevance to the situations of many countries today. Here are all the substantive files of the Chief of the Economic and Scientific Section (ESS) and his Director of Economics and Planning. In addition, UPA editors have selected documents on economic reform from more than 300 file boxes of the ESS director of finance, the ESS Antitrust and Cartels (later Fair Trade Practices) division, and the Industrial, Banking and Foreign Exchange, Labor, and Foreign Trade and Commerce divisions.
