Men’s Magazine Archive offers digital access to the backfiles of six major US and UK men’s-interest consumer magazines. Coverage is from the first issues and extends from the mid-19th century to the 21st. The archive offers researchers insights into contemporary issues and trends in history and society, masculinity, sex roles, literature, sports, fashion, popular culture / entertainment, and more.
This material is presented in full color page-image format, with article-level indexing and searchable text.
Publications:
Coverage, by default, is from issue 1 through to 2015 (or the publication ceased date), with issues scanned from cover to cover. The rarity of the source material, however, is such that there will be some coverage gaps (issues / pages).
Libraries rarely have good backfile holdings for this publication type and there has, until now, been little digitization of older issues of men’s magazines.
Provides solution to demand for image-rich content (e.g. advertisements, photos/illustrations) from researchers.
Caters to assignment-driven undergraduate use of this content, as well as the needs of seasoned researchers.
Take research deeper with complementary resources from ProQuest, such as Women’s Magazine Archive and the forthcoming GQ Archive.
This material serves multiple research areas, from men’s / women’s studies, fashion, and social history, through to arts / entertainment, politics, and media history.
The archive benefits from a range of titles, focusing on different subjects, such as fashion (M: The Civilized Man), sports (All Sports Illustrated Weekly,Sports Budget), lifestyle (National Police Gazette,Esquire[UK]), and fiction / men’s adventure pulp (Argosy).
