Overview

The Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, established in Moscow in 1970 as part of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, was the USSR's main research institute for American studies. The scholars of this influential think tank produced several perspectives on the United States and, to a lesser extent, Canada. SShA: Ekonomika, Politika, Ideologiia is the Institute's monthly publication dedicated to the detailed analysis of American foreign policy, internal political and economic affairs, and ideology. The micropublication USA: Economics, Politics, Ideology provides a unique look at Soviet perceptions of the United States and Canada over the past two decades. The journal's contributors are some of the Soviet Union's most influential leaders in research and government: Arbatov, Ivanian, Andropov, Popov, Nikiforov, Kremeniuk, and Davydov, to name a few.
